Preparing students for recognised music examinations
Music exam preparation without losing the joy of music.
Rather than simply teaching students how to pass an exam, we help them become confident, well-rounded musicians.
Personal Goals First
Your lessons are built around what you want to achieve, whether that's your first qualification, Grade 8, university preparation, confidence or simply becoming a stronger musician.
The Right Exam Board
ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool offer different approaches. Your teacher can help you choose a pathway that suits your instrument, style and ambitions.
More Than the Syllabus
Exam repertoire can sit alongside favourite songs, improvisation, creativity, technique and musicianship so lessons stay varied and motivating.
Beginner Friendly
You do not need previous exam experience. Students can begin with introductory grades or Grade 1 when they are genuinely ready.
Structured Progress
Preparing for a recognised qualification can provide a clear milestone, encouraging focused practice and a tangible sense of achievement.
Supportive Teaching
We want students to feel challenged without feeling overwhelmed. Confidence, enjoyment and progress all matter throughout the process.
Support throughout the examination process.
Our teachers support students throughout the entire examination journey, rather than simply introducing the syllabus and leaving you to figure everything else out.
We'll help you understand what's expected, work towards realistic goals and develop the musical skills required to perform confidently when exam day arrives.
- Choosing the right exam board
- Selecting suitable repertoire
- Technical work and scales
- Sight-reading where required
- Aural training
- Performance preparation
- Mock exams
- Exam booking guidance
We're with you from your first lesson through to exam day.
ABRSM, Trinity or Rockschool: which is right for you?
There isn't one universally “best” music exam board. Different pathways suit different instruments, musical interests and goals.
ABRSM
The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music is one of the world's most established music examination boards and is particularly popular for traditional and classical pathways.
Its exam routes can develop repertoire, technical skills, sight-reading and aural ability, alongside Performance Grades for students whose pathway places greater emphasis on performance.
Piano · Violin · Flute · Classical Guitar · Singing
Trinity College London
Trinity can suit students looking for a flexible, performance-focused route that values musical communication, interpretation and confidence alongside technical ability.
Trinity Level 3 music qualifications at Grades 6–8 are included on the UCAS Tariff, so qualifying results can carry UCAS points.
Piano · Singing · Drums · Guitar · Musical Theatre
Rockschool — RSL Awards
Rockschool is designed around contemporary musicians, with syllabuses covering styles such as rock, pop, metal, indie, funk and jazz.
It combines performance with practical musicianship and is particularly popular with students wanting a structured qualification based around modern styles. Eligible Rockschool Grades 6–8 carry UCAS Tariff points.
Electric Guitar · Bass Guitar · Drums · Vocals · Piano
Music grade tuition across multiple instruments.
Whether you're five or seventy-five, beginner or advanced, we'll help you progress confidently towards a suitable qualification if graded exams are part of your goals.
What are the benefits of music grades?
A graded music exam can provide a clear goal, but the value can go well beyond the qualification itself.
For some young musicians, higher graded music qualifications can also support applications to sixth forms, colleges or universities. Qualifying Level 3 grades from examination boards such as Trinity and RSL can carry UCAS Tariff points.

Lessons built around you — not an exam book.
One of the biggest reasons students enjoy learning at Benana is that preparing for grades does not mean every lesson has to become repetitive.
Rather than spending every session working through the syllabus from beginning to end, your teacher can combine exam preparation with the wider music that keeps you engaged and developing as a musician.
- Songs and pieces you genuinely enjoy
- Technical exercises
- Improvisation
- Musicianship
- Creativity
- Focused exam preparation
The goal is excellent progress without losing the reason you wanted to make music in the first place.
Confidence matters as much as the certificate.
“My son has been having electric guitar lessons with Benana Music Studio for just under a year and he’s doing brilliantly. He absolutely loves his lessons and always comes away excited and motivated. The teachers have been patient, kind and understanding and it’s made such a difference to his confidence.”Kelly
“Anna has been teaching me since I was 7 years old and with her help I have achieved grade one and two. I’m now working on my grade 3 with Seb. They always make me feel like I’m doing well and this helps my confidence.”Megan, aged 12
“Although I had had a guitar for many years and could play several simple chords, I had no sense of how to make music with the instrument. I have now had 8 lessons with Benana Music Studio and have made real progress. It has been transformative for me.”Simon

Questions about music exams in Southampton?
Which music exam board is best?
There isn't one universally best exam board. The right choice depends on your instrument, musical interests, preferred style of assessment and goals. We can help you compare ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool and decide which pathway may suit you.
Can complete beginners take music grades?
Yes. Many students begin with an introductory level such as Initial or Debut, or move towards Grade 1 once they are ready. There is no need to rush into an exam before the foundations are secure.
Do I have to take music exams at Benana?
No. Grades are completely optional. Some students enjoy having a qualification to work towards while others prefer lessons centred entirely on songs, technique, creativity or performance. Your goals come first.
Can adults take music grades?
Absolutely. Music grades are not just for children. We teach adult beginners, returning musicians and experienced players who want to work towards recognised qualifications.
Do music grades carry UCAS points?
Certain Level 3 graded music qualifications at Grades 6–8 can carry UCAS Tariff points. The exact points depend on the qualification, exam board, grade and result, so students should always check the current tariff for their chosen pathway.
How long does it take to reach Grade 1?
There is no single correct timescale. Progress depends on factors such as age, previous experience, lesson frequency and practice between lessons. Your teacher can give realistic guidance once they understand how you learn and where you are starting from.
Can I still learn my favourite songs while preparing for grades?
Yes. Exam preparation does not need to replace everything else you enjoy. At Benana, lessons can combine repertoire and technical preparation with favourite songs, improvisation, musicianship and creative work.
Which instruments can I take grades in at Benana?
Grade tuition is available across multiple subjects, including piano, guitar, bass guitar, singing, musical theatre, drums, violin and keyboard, with availability depending on the teacher and examination pathway.
Can you help with Grade 8 and advanced exam preparation?
Yes. Benana teaches students from beginner level through to advanced musicians, including students preparing for Grade 8 and higher-level musical study where a suitable teacher is available.
Ready to work towards your next music grade?
Whether you're aiming for your very first grade, preparing for Grade 8 or simply looking for expert music lessons in Southampton, we'd love to help.
